Yemi Eberechi Alade, mostly known as Yemi Alade hails from Abia state. Born on the 13th of March, 1989, the song writer, afro pop singer, actress and activist is presently 31 years old. With her Igbo and Yoruba descent, she’s multilingual as she sings in Igbo, Yoruba, pidgin, Portuguese, French and Swahili and her music has gone beyond the shores of Africa and has greatly impacted the African countries and the world at large. Her genres of music are Afro pop, R&B and world music.
Yemi Alade started her educational pursuit from Saviour Baptist Primary School and then later attended Victory Grammar School all in Lagos where she completed her Primary and secondary school education respectively. She’s a graduate of Geography from the University of Lagos.
Yemi Alade’s success story began in 2009 when she won the Peak Talent Show. Soon after, her hit song “Johnny” from the album King of Queens was played outside the shores of Nigeria and this gave her a lot of popularity the has pivoted her career to where it is today.
Her albums “King of Queens” and “Mama Africa” has taken her on several tours round many African countries. Successively, in 2015 and 2016, she won the MTV African Music Awards (MAMA) for best female. Asides her music, her fashion sense especially her spectacular hair styles which always promote the rich African heritage, eye catching music videos and her lit performances on stage has given her lots of commendations.
She’s also been the winner of the Headies award for best performer successively in 2018 and 2019. Most recently, on 27th June in the event “The Global Goal: Unite for our Future”, which’s purpose was to test and provide treatment for Covid-19 mostly in rural communities who didn’t have enough access to healthcare, she was one of the artiste who performed alongside other notable artistes like Shakira, Usher, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus etc.
